Moe calves are free – free range and free of growth implants (steroids) and antibiotics. Calves are born in the spring and are weaned in October at about six months of age. They winter on grass and ranch-raised hay. As yearlings, they go to summer pasture for six months. By the time they become Moe Beef they have grown slowly and naturally on a forage diet with a hay-oat finish.
Richard Moe practices the “walk and talk softly” theory with cattle. He believes in giving a cow the choice to go on her own rather than forcing the issue with a cattle prod, which are not allowed on the ranch. Instead, he ‘works cattle’ with patience, calmness and Maggie, his border collie and right-hand girl. When a cow takes too much time making up her mind, Maggie looks her in the eye and helps her decide.
During calving, when Maggie and Richard make their 2 a.m. rounds to check the cows, they can walk through the corral without anyone even getting up. During those nights, Maggie can touch or even lick the cow’s nose. When it’s time to bring the cows into the corral for the night, however, it’s a different story. She’s all business and puts up with no nonsense.
