Moe Beef comes from a closed herd. All of the breeding females have been raised on the ranch. The best heifers from each year’s calf crop are kept as replacement heifers.
Ear tags are attached to each animal for source verification. Upon birth, each calf gets a tag that matches its mother’s number and year of birth (e.g., 6.88). This is all entered into a spreadsheet that lists the calf’s gender, date of birth, mother’s number and mother’s mother.
Richard usually doesn’t need a tag to tell which calf comes from which cow. He’ll look at a calf and say: “That calf was the first one born this year,” or “That’s Lucky’s calf!”
